Lovely establishment with great service but also too cold in the rooms in December. Heaters in my room have never been... effective. So just be forewarned to bundle up if you happen to stay here while SANTA Barbara weather is not ideal.read more
I particularly enjoyed the breakfast. Great quick foods, cheese, bagels, cereal. Eat and go type foods. I stayed a... while and had several cups of their coffee. Comfortable dining area. Sat in a professorial chair and read the paper. Great start to the day.read more
What a beautiful, romantic, and restful hotel! I haven’t slept so well in years! The comfy beds, and pillows(!), are... heaven! Love that it’s so close to State Street and a great place for walking and exploring the heart of the city. The fine wine and cheese in the afternoons was a special treat, too! No need to hunt for a good restaurant: the house restaurant, “Louis”, cannot not be topped! All in all a very happy and beautiful experience! Heartily recommend!read more

We booked this hotel at the very last minute on a whim. When we arrived I was delighted at how nice and cozy this... place is. The staff was very friendly, our room was very comfortable and nice. Here’s where it gets better: I sent my husband down for champagne glasses and fruit, we brought our own bottle. The staff asked him what we were celebrating, and in regular conversation he told them we we starting our anniversary festivities. Next thing you know there’s a knock at our door, a woman delivering a bottle of champagne. We did not order, so my husband calls downstairs only to find out they sent it to us! They also included a very lovely Happy Anniversary card! This was so unexpected! We are very grateful for such a nice gesture. Not only was this a beautiful place to stay and we definitely will stay again, we are so impressed with the service and kindness.read more
Very historical ambience. Very friendly staff. Cottage was awesome. Oh my. What charming cottage, it was like... stepping back in time. Good size sitting / queen bed sleeping area room. Walk in closet with nice size bathroom. Working fireplace. Large tv and lots of space for your clothing. Also had a twin sleeper bed, which made it nice for extra guest.
Nice sitting area porch with rose garden out side. With a very large quaint sitting lawn, garden area, with a nice bubbling fountain in a arbor area. Nice gazebo sitting area. Morning continental breakfast. Afternoon wine, cheese and crackers and fruit and fruit juice. Also, coffee, tea, and hot coco all day long. Late evening there is cookies and milk. There is an onsite restaurant - excellent food and friendly staff.
The Upham Hotel and country house is with in a short walk to downtown, transportation, restaurants, Starbucks, show, antique stores, restaurants of multi bounty. No pets. Sorry.
Place does need a general maintenance work to present the idea it was just built, and not over 100 years old.
I came for the peacefulness, quiet, ability to sit outside and relax without being eaten by bugs, no neighbors constantly wanting to chatter. Wonderful ambiance.
Recommend The Upham Hotel and Country House to anyone who wants the stepping back in time life and to feel special.

In this Pandemic, staying safe while responsibly having a great time with your family outside the safety and comfort of your home is a crucial choice for each of us. I chose this hotel for a Thanksgiving weekend getaway due mainly to the room description indicated on my reservation. The room I chose mentioned there was a patio included. Pics attached as proof.
I did not want to just be cooped up inside the hotel. That’s the same as just staying home. I figured we can safely enjoy our stay relaxing on the outdoor patio.
When we checked in, we were led to a hallway room. NO patio.
I didn’t want to be confrontational & ruin our stay so I went with what we were given. After about a couple hours, I went back to the front desk and kindly asked if I misunderstood the reservation we had on the room with a patio and showed the screenshot of my reservation. Hotels.com CLEARLY stated that our room included a patio.
The email directly coming from the Upham Hotel CLEARLY stated it was a BUNGALOW QUEEN ROOM which had a patio (pictures attached for proof).
Front desk Aliyah and Denise Spain the General Manager, then proceeded to explain that we actually got an upgrade (which btw I didn’t believe because this was an easy excuse for them to get away from further trouble). Mind you this was the first I’m hearing this.
I clarified by asking: “that room we got without the patio in a hallway is an upgrade?” I was told yes because it was a much larger room in square footage. Denise Spain explained we reserved the most economical room & they upgraded us. Their website verifies that the room with the patio is indeed the most affordable room (see pic). They said if we wanted the room with a patio, they “think” one is available.
We should have been given that room in the 1st place and if they truly offered the “upgraded room”(as they claimed), then they should have presented that as an option from the time we checked in & asked if we wanted to avail of the upgraded room or go for the room as we originally reserved. Did not happen.
Some people like me don’t really care for the square footage or an upgrade. They kept reiterating we got an upgraded room since it’s larger. But what mattered to me was the room I reserved should have been the one given to us. As mentioned, I’m not the arguing type so I left it at that.
Overall, I think that most people pay for the experience not how something looks like.
Ex: an exquisitely looking food doesn’t necessarily mean it’s automatically great-tasting too. The hotel truly looks nice from the outside. But it’s very outdated. A bit spooky too if I’ll truly be honest.
The treatment we got was extremely disappointing and very hurtful. I’m extremely regretful and thankful at the same time. Regret because I could’ve taken the more than $200 a night somewhere else. Thankful now knowing I’m not coming back.
Upon check out I was asked how our stay was and I was calmly honest enough to express my disappointment. Denise Spain the General Manager promised something to make our experience better. If it transpires, then I’ll amend my review.
What really made our stay at the Upham Hotel was the hospitality. We decided to stop on Santa Barbara and were having a hard time booking a place last minute. We were so happy that The Upham Hotel had a room available and quickly made our way over. We were greeted with a smiling face and were quickly checked into our room. We were given a very nice gift basket that included our toiletries, water, homemade scones, cookies, and a bottle of local Santa Barbara wine since the hotel was limiting certain services as COVID precautions-which we very much appreciated and enjoyed on our balcony (minus the toiletries of course). The only thing odd about the hotel and the reason for the 4 stars was that the room was really cramped with hodge podge furnishings that were way oversized for the space. I think a nice antique bed, small desk & chair, and maybe a very small chest of drawers would’ve fit much better and allowed us to move around easier. The other shared spaces like the garden, fountain and gazebo areas, and restaurant were so well done and great spaces to stop and relax, much different than the room itself.
I needed a stay-cation and one night at the Upham (only 11 miles from my house!) fit the bill. My husband and I stayed there July 2020.
I chose the Upham because they consistently donate a one-night, mid-week, off-season stay when asked by local schools to support the school's silent auction fundraisers. So many businesses don't donate, or don't donate as well. I appreciate the Upham for supporting local schools in this way.
Secondly, I chose the Upham because it is so charming and the grounds are pretty. They have grass, trees, flowers, and fountains with benches, chairs, and tables dotted all over the landscape.
Thirdly, we love to eat at Louie's Restaurant right there on site. (So that's where we ate dinner!)
We stayed in the Master Suite. The shower was amazing. The bathtub had controls we couldn't quite figure out (but we still tried!) and the private outdoor spaces were perfect. The bed was SO COMFORTABLE. The service was amazing. Because of COVID, they couldn't offer the same winetasting, cookies & milk, and breakfast buffet, so we received a bottle of wine and a hospitality basket with 2 scones, 2 cookies, and our single-use hospitality items (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion, cotton balls, cotton swabs, shower cap) at check-in.
Maybe this is silly, but the thing I delighted in was that the shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body lotion had wide rims, making it really easy for the liquid to come out. Other hotels offer toiletries with the tiniest openings, and it takes forever and a lot of ketchup-like moves to get the liquid out.
Beautiful hotel, with the kindest people. The breakfast is small but delicious. You can even eat in the garden, where you can sometimes see rabbits running around...so cute! The hotel is one block away from downtown so in the evening it's easy to find a restaurant. I would definitely recommend to stay at this hotel if you like to have a relaxed vacation! :)
From the minute we checked in until we left, our expectations were greatly exceeded. The staff was very friendly and efficient. It is an historic hotel. It is charming and the grounds are beautiful. There is a lovely sunny room where in the morning you can enjoy fresh fruit, muffins, quiche and delicious coffee. If you have a chance, don't miss lunch or dinner at Louie's, which is on the grounds of The Upham.
Super cute! This place is pretty, not too fancy, very clean and provides a good vacation feel. We are staying now at the 2 bedroom suite for two nights and we would stay one more night if it was available. We are with a 3 year old and a 7 month baby and this is super convenient. In contrast to other hotels that provide a “pack-and-play”, they have a normal cribwith a thick mattress! There is a cute grass area that we could run around with our daughter,, great restaurant that has enough variety for all the family, complimentary coffee all day, complimentary wine in the afternoon and Oreos and milk at night. It is minutes from down town (a block or two away) and still is not as busy as staying in at the actual city center.
I’m happy we ended up hear.
Louie's restaurant that is within the Upham is by far still the best meal I've ever had. I was here back in October of 2017 and am now back again due to the ambience of it all. If you are ever looking for an amazing B&B the Upham is the place in Santa Barbara to go. And if you stay go to Louie's you will not regret it! Unless you aren't from here and start craving there food. Then you might regret some of it because their chefs are top notch!!! Already planning on another trip here in a few months!!!
We only came for lunch at the restaurant. It was a perfect place to eat a relaxed meal that was beautifully prepared and well presented. Not to mention delicious! A nice surprise close to the hotel where we did stay.
My wife and I stayed for one night and loved it! Location is great, an easy walk to State Street. The room was clean and comfortable. The Continental breakfast has lots to choose from, and the complimentary wine & cheese each afternoon and Oreos & milk each evening really made the stay feel hospitable. Overall, 10/10 would stay again.
Love the Upham. Close to Public Market, which had great food! Breakfast and Wine each day at Upham make for great day. Plenty of amazing restaurants close by. Amazing customer service! This place is my home away from home.
